Week 5 Update

Well my friends… it’s that time of the week again where I provide you with some college football insight, but first I would like to take a moment and thank any of you who have been with me through the first couple of weeks, those of you who are just now joining, and those of you who have yet to join. Now in the words of Mulan let’s get down to business.

Weekly Recap

What another exciting week of good ole college football. Within the first 4 weeks of play there has already been plenty of excitement on and off of the field. There has also been some tragedy; prayers go out to the southern player who was paralyzed during the Georgia game, and also the family of the eastern Kentucky player who passed in a car accident over the weekend, such young lives taken so early…..

Now on to more exciting news it seems that every week a top 10 team is on the verge of losing its place in the chase for the college football playoff, TCU was the victim this week and boy was I so so so so sad that they won. Don’t get me wrong I have nothing against TCU, but I love me a good ole upset and I do think that TCU is the most overrated team in the top 10 rankings at this point and time. What we all saw from the game this weekend is that TCU is 100000% beatable and will most likely show that weakness as they face Baylor in the latter half of the season. Staying local, the University of Texas loses once again, and for the second consecutive week it’s not offense or defense who has struggled, it’s the darn special teams unit. Now by no means do I underestimate the pressure felt by a kicker who needs to make a crucial field goal. But when you’re the punter backed up within your own 20 and you fumble the snap just to get off a well below average pooch punt that sets the opposing team up for a game winning field goal welllll my friend you need to get it figured out because you literally only have one job. A miss kick is totally understandable but a dropped snap. Well I’m sure the campus let you have it after the game oh not to mention it was a HOME game for the longhorns. Looks to be a long season in the books as UT travels to play TCU this weekend. Maybe they can pull something out against the Horned Frogs but we all have dreams right?

Now the Pac-12 in my opinion is probably the most stacked conference in the NCAA right now; simply by performance and playing ability. The state of Arizona took an absolute beating this past weekend, UCLA handled Arizona in a convincing manner, and USC treated ASU as if they were a local high school jv team. Oregon suffered its worst home loss in probably program history by Utah by a whopping margin of 42 points. Stanford continues to build after its week 1 loss to Northwestern, and Cal has yet to drop a game. The upside is that Arizona is good enough to bounce back from almost any loss, and Oregon well they are no longer dominant which may not be good for any duck fan but for me I am very content with their poor performance these past few weeks.

Looking at the BIG 10 there are 4 teams in the conversation for potential conference champions Northwestern has looked fantastic the first 4 weeks of the season landing itself in the top 25, as much as I hate to say it Michigan holds a good BYU team to the beloved Goose Egg finding themselves in the top 25, and after a terrible week one loss the Wolverines have caught a rhythm leading into conference play. Michigan State is playing better football than Ohio State both of which sit at number 1 & 2 respectively at the top of the AP Poll top 25, while Ohio state finally found its offense this past weekend it worries me as a fan that it took them almost 4 weeks to get it figured out, but seeing how the BIG 10 is mainly a 4 team conference with a lot off sleepers and underdogs I look forward as the Buckeyes polish the edges in conference play, as for the Spartans all they have to do is keep playing football as Purdue should be a walk in the park. And let’s not forget Wisconsin who I really haven’t payed much attention to but you can’t turn the other cheek because since that loss to Alabama they’ve only gotten better.

While the SEC is still strong as usual teams are trying to claim the name as top dog as it seems that Alabama lost its title to ole miss. The thing is the SEC is so good that any team can run the conference. My favorite right now…. Well I don’t really have one, Texas A&M is the best team offensively in my opinion despite going into overtime with a struggling Arkansas team, while LSU can run at anyone with Heisman candidate Leanord Fournette who by the way had a remarkable game this past weekend racking up 244yds on 26 carries with 2td’s against a very underrated Syracuse squad. Ole Miss has a defense that is fast and physical but loses its motor in the latter stages of the game. Alabama….. well its Bama and they will somehow find a way to win. Miss State is a one loss team playing its way back to the top. While Florida and Georgia have yet to drop a game this season. Now that I think about it the SEC is still the best conference in the NCAA sorry Pac-12 you’re still exciting to watch.

Underrated Team of the Week

This is where I will give credit to one team who potentially deserves to be in the top 25 over some of the one loss teams while the top rankings are competitive I still think this team deserves a spot or deserves to be in the conversation.
Now most of you may know a 4-0 team by the name of the Memphis Tigers a team that has struggled heavily in the past well it is the year 2015 and the tigers no longer live in that past. They are off to one of their best starts in program history. They have an offense that ranks in the top 20 statistically in passing yards, and in the top 5 for scoring offense. With a combined 14-3 record so far dating back to last season the tigers have won a total of 12 games between 2009-2013 they starting seeing success in the 2014-15 season going 10-3 winning their bowl game. Now off to a 4-0 start the tigers look for continued success offensively under the system of Fuente who struggled his first 2 years as head coach. All the tigers need to do is preform consistently on defense and the can consider themselves in the top 25, while it may be tough I can see them finishing the season 11-2, or 12-1 potentially dropping games only to Ole Miss, and Navy. While it’s tough to be a ranked team in a conference like the American conference if Memphis only drops 1-2 games max they could find themselves in the mix. Watch this weekend as they attempt for a 5-0 start against USF

Games of the Week

Texas A&M v. Miss St- while the Aggies seemed to have struggled last week against the razorbacks, the bulldogs had challenges of their own against Auburn. Both teams look to regain strength in this potential high scoring affair.

Notre Dame v. Clemson- Clemson is probably the best team in the ACC, and they look to derail the Irish from their CFP hopes. While the Irish have to replace their quarterback who is out for the rest of the season Brian Kelly still has tricks up his sleeve.

Ole Miss v. Florida- Florida has finally gotten back to its ole winning times since the Tim Tebow days, now while they may not be national title contenders they look to upset one this weekend at home against the Rebels. The gator offense has looked crisp with Will Grier calling the shots, someone who should have started as a true freshman. That rebel defense will be hard to play against and that high powered offense will be tough to stop. But anything can happen in the swamp on a Saturday

Georgia v. Alabama- this is on my list because Georgia has the ability to give Bama another loss which will be amazing, Nick Chubb is a man amongst boys and the Georgia defense will take advantage of the inexperienced Bama quarterback.

Texas Tech v. Baylor- as Tech almost achieved an upset against TCU last week look for them to do it again this week. While Baylor has a better defense than TCU, Tech still has an offense that is difficult to keep quiet.

My Top 10

This is the part where I’ll be sharing my top 10 teams in the NCAA opposed to the current how it is now.

     1.      Ole Miss- Playing good football and an upset over Alabama I like ole miss in the number one spot
     2.      Ohio State – Reigning champs and have yet to drop a game, despite struggling they seem to have it together after last week.
     3.      Michigan State- a close third if not tied for second the Spartans are looking as good as ever
     4.      Baylor- That high octane offense deserves to be noticed
     5.      UCLA- after struggling against BYU finding a way to embarrass Arizona on the road pushed them to the number 5 spot
     6.      LSU- Heisman candidate Leanord Fournette is all I have to say
     7.      Georgia- Just like LSU Nick Chubb puts this team on his back
     8.      Notre Dame- If Malik Zaire wasn’t injured you could see the Irish a little higher on the list
     9.      Utah- Went into Oregon and absolutely embarrassed them, more than deserving of a top 10        spot
     10.  TCU- Still a top 10 team but completely overrated, not everything you’d want defensively but can still light up a scoreboard
