SkSergiokosco: CFB Week 2 Preview

By: Tre Bailey

With week one in the books, and college football now in full swing life is now easier for all of us even if it is just for a mere Saturday at a time. Now of you aren’t a college football fan, my job is to educate you so you will be as die hard as a fan as I am. Now let’s get to the main reason you came to this page the weekly rundown.

Weekend Recap

With the first weekend of football in the past it left me with a lot of answered questions. Starting with my boys from the Ohio State University. Braxton Miller is an absolute threat weather it is him throwing or running the ball, transition him to H-Back and you have a lethal weapon that teams will find a difficult time to scheme against. Not to mention the 99 rated spin move that he used to put VA Tech defenders on Skates. While VA Tech unfortunately lost their starting QB their defense did exactly as I expected, although unranked their defense is much underrated; watch out for them in the ACC this year.

Baylor put on another show and reminded us why they are the nation’s top offense. As I said before it will be between them and TCU to win the Big 12 if Oklahoma State loses its consistency. Scoring in 50 seconds is a feat for any team but SMU wasn’t playing games…… The first half that is after which they ran out of gas and Baylor’s depth took control and ran away with the convincing victory.

Down in Tallahassee Everett Golson did not disappoint going 19-25 with 302yds and 4td’s kind of a wonderful drop off from the current first overall pick of the draft. He led the offense with confidence which you always love to see in a transfer quarterback. Speaking of confidence my boy Josh Rosen did more than expected this past weekend as he led his bruins to his first collegiate victory as the signal caller.

Now some performances that disappointed the whole nation: while I am confident in my picks I have to admit that I was wrong about that one. Arizona State looked absolutely awful against Texas A&M while I tend to root for the aggies every now and again it was tough to see one of my pac-12 favorites get man handled like they did. I should have saw it coming with a confident Kyle Allen and that nascar paced offense wearing down ASU keeping their defense exhausted.

Staying within the pac-12… and I think we all know what I am talking about… STANFORD what on earth happened. In most scenarios your season opener is supposed to be a glorified fast paced walkthrough. Well northwestern wasn’t having any of that and outlasted Stanford in a 16-6 snooze fest which was only interesting because the world wanted to see if Stanford would pull something out of the magical hat. I guess Ben Hogan can kiss his Heisman hopes goodbye.

Conference Rundown

PAC-12: After disappointing performances by Stanford and Arizona state don’t look past the fact that they are still two talented programs who have the ability to contest for the pac-12 title. Injuries are looming Arizona as their anchor linebacker Scooby Wright is sidelined with a knee injury (don’t be surprised if you see him stay for his senior year after being hurt). Oregon handled Business against EWSU ironically the last school their current quarterback attended, but a real test is presented to them this Saturday as they face a highly talented Michigan State. UCLA and USC both had an easy week one and look to continue their race as the PAC-12 leader this year is going to be a tossup with so much talent across the board, I don’t believe Oregon is the outright dominant team anymore.

BIG-10: Michigan still has some work to do under new coach Jim Harbaugh, questions remain as to if he will be able to resurrect what was once a national spotlight Michigan team. Michigan State is again strong defensively but offensively has some edges to polish, they still will compete to win the Big10 East this year. Ohio State will face some challenges from Penn State and Michigan State, but with the offensive and defensive talent we all know who will dominate the conference. But be on the lookout for Minnesota and Northwestern both of which played and performed well against top 25 teams.

SEC: The conference that is assumed to not be as dominate as years past. Alabama will continue its race for dominance as teams try to take over the throne. I really like Fournette out of LSU, a dynamic back that will allow LSU’s offense to produce. Ole miss and Mississippi state both look nice but State Faces its first real test this weekend against LSU in the conference opener. Florida may be on the rise again as it seems to have figured out its whole quarterback fiasco which has seemed to be the problem since the Tim Tebowdays. A&M will look to have a better year than last with a high flying offense but being in the SEC West it doesn’t seem that they will finish better than 3rd but hey they have given Bama a run for their money the past 2 years. For me it’s between Georgia, Florida and Tennessee yes I said it Tennessee for the SEC East.

ACC: Georgia tech and Florida State will play for the conference title, in a conference that isn’t as strong those two stand out the most But I wouldn’t be surprised if Clemson put their name in the mix either. Not much going on in the ACC so don’t expect anyone to make a huge splash this year.

BIG-12: Baylor and TCU will fight for outright champions this year As Oklahoma state and Oklahoma chase to just destroy all of their hopes and dreams. Malik Jefferson is a man amongst boys in Charlie Strong’s sad sad University Of Texas team, a disappointing offense and a lackluster defense (aside from Jefferson) don’t expect UT to be anything above average, and lets pray Strong has a job after the next year or so. KState looks to improve to the form they were a couple of years ago while Texas Tech hopes to finish above .500 this year which they can do with Mahomes running the offense, and good ole Kliffcalling the plays. Iowa State will ruin someone’s chances at a title run as it seems they only perform at high levels when someone else’s season is on the line (remember when Oklahoma state thought they will play for a national championship yahhhh we all do) as for Kansas well let’s hope they can win more than 2 games

Weekly Wrap Up
What to watch for:
Oregon VS Michigan State: the first real test for either team, as it seems now if you lose you’re out of the CFB playoff picture so you can expect a great matchup. If Michigan State can slow down the Ducks offense they can win this game.

Miss St VS LSU: With LSU’s season opener being cancelled, questions remain as to if they are prepared for the conference opener. With a Heisman hopeful running back LSU looks to wear out the bulldog’s defense with a classic ground and pound approach. Miss State will need to play discipline defense as play action pass will play a large role.

Oklahoma VS Tennessee: This will probably be the game of the day. Tennessee’s revamped offenses looks to overwhelm a strong OU defense. Both offenses premier sophomore running backs who have equal playmaking ability and explosiveness. Both Kamara and Hurd ran for over 100 yards and Dobbs added another 205 in the air. While transfer QB Baker Mayfield had an astounding week 1 going 23-33 with 388 and 3td’s.I’m giving a slight edge to Tennessee who has a more versatile game being able to get it done on the ground and through the air.
Look for an exciting night of college football after a pretty boring afternoon.
Also check out the highlight of the week: Braxton Miller on a 53 Yard TD     run with a nifty spin move to elude defenders and find himself in the end zone.
